Mac OS X Finder Error 36: What does this error mean and how to fix it?

One common error Mac users encounter when trying to move or copy files from one location to another is error 36. The bug has been detected in both previous and newer versions of Mac OS platforms. Some users received the same error code when backing up files by copying a specific folder or group of files from one drive to another. If this error appears, you will see a message that is being read:

The search may not be successful because some data in the file name cannot be read or written. (Error code -36), or something like that.

Other Mac users also encounter error code 36 when copying files to USB drivers. In this case, users are normally allowed to copy a single file, but they cannot drag and drop one folder at a time.

What does error code 36 mean in Mac OS X and what is the cause?

Error code 36 is indicated in addition to other input/output (I/O) errors that usually occur when copying damaged files. This usually happens when certain folders of Windows compatible FAT16 or FAT32 volumes are transferred to and from a Mac computer. FAT16 and FAT32 are Windows file systems that use a file distribution table (FAT) to identify named files, consisting of symbols and extensions. The file assignment table refers to the index assigned to list the contents of a drive to record the location of each file stored on it.

In addition to corrupted files, several Finder Error 36 errors on computers running Mac OS X have been associated with malware or computer viruses.

How do I correct the error in Finder 36 on my Mac?

Solutions may vary depending on the actual cause of the problem. For example, if the error is caused by malware/virus, using a malware and antivirus program may be the best option to correct the error. Here are some recommended methods for correcting the Finder 36 error on Mac OS devices.

You can correct Finder error code 36 on your Mac manually or automatically. However, Mac experts recommend choosing manual solutions to address this bug. Because implementing a manual solution takes time and effort, but offers a more promising result.

To start, you need to create a new folder, copy it to your desktop and put it back on your hard disk. If you see error code 36, it means there are issues on your Mac that need to be fixed.

So this is what you can do to try to correct the mistake by that time:

Step 1. Check and verify permissions and duty sharing options.

The permission settings are used to determine who has access to the files on your computer and who can change them. You can change the permission settings by opening the lower part of the information window for a file, folder or drive in the search engine. For example, if you want other people to connect to your Mac to share files, you can change the folder’s permission settings so other people can do so. You can control which users can view which files. For security reasons, it is advisable to set permissions with certain restrictions, such as allowing other users to view but not modify files in the folder.

In case of error 36, option Allow and share may have been limited to certain file transfers. For example, it is not allowed to transfer multiple files at once, so you will be asked to use Finder error 36 when you try to do this. In this case, you can go to Permissions and Share Options and make sure your account is configured to access the files you are trying to copy. You can set the resolution or for each user to display.

First, tell us how to grant rights to users or groups on your Mac:

  • Select the drive, file, or folder you want to share with other users.
  • Select File and then retrieve Information. Then you need to see the exchange and consent information.
  • Click on the triangle for disclosure if the information under Sharing and Permissions is not visible.
  • To unlock it, you may need to click on the padlock icon and then enter your administrator name and password.
  • Click on a user group in the Name column and then click Permission settings in the context menu. Options include read and write only, read only, write only and no access.

Now start configuring and setting permissions according to your preferences.

Step 2. Check and make sure that the connection to external media is stable.

Error code 36 can also occur when a problem occurs in external media, including unstable connections. This also involves checking the external drives to ensure that everything is properly connected and that there is no physical damage.

Step 3. Try copying files in safe mode.

You can also try to copy files in protected mode to prevent a corrupted file from causing Finder error 36. You can move files by simply dragging and dropping without using the search function.

Step 4. Use the terminal window to execute the dot_clean command.

If none of these solutions has worked, you should proceed to the following possible solution(s). Here are the other options:

    • Go to Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal. This launches or opens the Terminal application on your Mac.
  • Type or type dot_clean or dot_clean /Path/To/The/Problematic/Directory/ in the terminal window.
  • Drag the desired folder to the terminal window. To see the path to the folder, select it in Finder and go to File-> Get Info (Icommand). Or you can simply (click command) click on the name in the top center of the Finder window to display the path.
  • Press Enter or Return to execute the dot_clean command. Files with a suspicious hidden point (._) will then be deleted, and until then you can copy the files without Finder error request 36.

If none of the above solutions could fix Finder error 36 and you still cannot copy files to or from your Mac, you should now consider using a third-party application to fix the I/O file transfer error on your Mac. The most reliable way to combat Error Code 36 is to find authoritative applications to monitor or diagnose your device with Mac OS X. These programs are designed to work with registries and correct various errors that affect different Mac computers.
