Netgear R6400 vs R6700: AC Router Comparison

Today we are going to look at two very popular Netgear routers. Once they’re at the top of the frequency spectrum of wireless AC routers, time doesn’t make them the best of the best.

Nevertheless, both of them stick to the respectable artists (AC1750) who are now in the middle row of air conditioners, and have some solid features that will satisfy the majority of today’s buyers.

They look almost identical (there are small differences, to be honest!)… but, of course, one has to be better than the other, right? !

Let’s first take a look at the characteristics of the two routers and then complete what makes each of them unique. We’ll turn them against each other eventually: R6700 versus R6400…

Okay, first of all, what these two routers have in common Well, a lot, actually! Let’s see what their options are.


Look at these routers, and anyone familiar with Netgear will recognize them as Netgear routers. Black version? Take a look. Sloped design? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Are there ventilation holes on the side? Yeah, that, too. Antennas sticking out from behind like the tail of a scorpion? Of course you did.

High speed network speed

Both routers use AC Wireless with a theoretical speed of 450 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band and 1300 Mbps in the 5 GHz band. These are robust speeds that allow multiple devices to stream HD video, play games, and perform other bandwidth-intensive activities at the same time. If you want an even more secure connection and don’t have to worry about lines, both routers also have Gigabit Ethernet ports to which you can connect your laptop, computer or other Ethernet-compatible device.

Extended QoS

The two routers mentioned in today’s article have extended the quality of service. This allows you to prioritize your bandwidth usage with specific devices, data types or programs.

For example, if someone on your network downloads a file and another person makes a video call, you can set that person to prioritise the traffic of the person making the video call to ensure they have the best connection, which means they are less likely to have connection problems.

Of course, downloading may take a little longer, but it will probably be less important (if not, you can simply give priority to downloading).

Both routers have beamforming functions. Generating beam signals can help improve signal reliability in remote locations. This is a very useful feature, especially if you need a router to cover a large area.

Is the R6700 better than the R6400? Main differences

Of course, it’s better to be subjective, and it will depend on the features you want to get from your router. But here are some characteristics of the that the R6700 and R6400 have – or at least better.

1GHz Dual Core Processor

The R6700 has an excellent dual-core 1 GHz processor. By comparison: The R6400 has a solid but not so powerful 800 MHz dual-core processor.

Processors are used in routers to steer traffic, block unwanted traffic (firewall/NAT) and provide functions under the hood efficiently. Processors are especially important if you want to connect a large number of devices to your router and if you also want to connect a USB stick for sharing.

In theory, the R6700 processor should be able to handle more connections than the R6400, but this should not be a problem, especially if few devices need to be connected to the router.

However, this is not a one-way street. R6400 has certain functions not provided by R6700. Includes:

Two USBports

The R6400 has USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports. By comparison: The R6400 has only one USB 3.0 port. Although this is not an obstacle for many of you if you have two devices you want to connect via USB (external drive, printer, scanner, etc.), it can be difficult to bypass the R6400.

R6400 versus R6700: Solutions, solutions!

To be honest, the decision doesn’t have to be that complicated. Do you need a faster processor? Then select R6700. If you like the idea of an extra USB port, choose the R6400.

If you are indifferent to these features, it will of course be a little harder to decide what to choose. Why don’t you think it’s cheaper?
